LISTEN: CHAPTER 5

Catherine’s POV
I opened my eyes the lush velvet drapery above my head greeted me. I immediately jumped up, regretting everything when my head felt dizzy. I looked back at the bed behind me and caught a glimpse of the wall clock, 5:48 it read. Wow, I think I slept a little.
I recalled where Jade’s room was and immediately headed there. It was the door next to mine so it didn’t take long for me to get there.
As I opened the door, I saw Harold sitting on a chair next to a record player. A box lay on Jade’s lap and a gruff voice surrounded the room.
Then I realized, he showed them to her. He showed the tapes. Oh no, I’m in great trouble. “What are you doing here?” I said, evenly, trying to hide the fact that I’m nervous.
“Making her feel better, I heard that talking to comatose patients helps them get better.” He said, turning off the player. “Well, it’s my turn.” I kicked him out with his tapes and faced Jade.
“Look, I’m sorry. I didn’t want you to know. I didn’t want your life be ruined.” I started to cry but I thought it was wrong. I stiffened my tears.
I still have so many secrets that I need to tell her and she’s still blaming me why we’re in this house. I have to make it up for her.
“Honey, don’t worry. I’m gonna find a job and we’ll be out of here for good.” I was tempted to poke so many holes in my story. My low-paying job will not be enough for her meds.
But I have to be tough. It’s my fault why we’re in this mess, I have to get us out. I’ll find a job tomorrow and as quick as I can. Maybe I can ask my boss to give me another chance at the cafĂ©.
I have to at least try, I can’t take any chances. And I have to start with telling her the truth, the whole truth, the truth about me and his father.
“Honey, that day when me and your father got into a fight because he was too busy with his job, we couldn’t even see him in the house anymore.” Tears came pushing through and my mouth shivered.
“Then, I asked him, his business or us? He made his choice, a choice I couldn’t accept. We wanted you to have both a mother and a father but I just couldn’t stand it.
I kicked him out and I lied to you. I told you that he was out and about for a business trip and you can keep him company by sending records of your voice.”
I paused, tears now drenched my lap. But I have to do this. “He sent his records too but I wanted to make his profile bad up until one day you’d accept why we decided to split. And you did.
That day when were supposed to go to court for that matter, he refused to sign the divorce paper.”
“I just decided to put a good face to you and not tell the truth about it. But, I guess we can’t keep a secret for too long. Jade, me and your father are still married, your still 50% his and he has every right to call you his daughter. I’m so sorry.”
I cried and cried and laid my head on her wrist. “Excuse me, dinner will be ready in 15 minutes.” The butler’s voice peeked from a crack on the door.
“I’ll be there.” I said in the middle of sobs. I then forced myself to smile. I remembered Doctor Santiago’s tip to always let her hear positive things.
“I better get ready. Your father got me a lot of fancy and frilly clothes.” I laughed, forcefully. “I think he wants me to wear one. I really wished you could see my closet.”
I stood up, wiping all my tears and went towards the door. “See you later, honey. I love you.” I waited for a response and then reminded myself she can’t, or won’t.

LISTEN: CHAPTER 4

Catherine’s POV
Doctor Santiago gave me a cold glare as if to say ‘Yup, she heard everything’
He pulled me out of the room and Harold followed. “That was very irresponsible of the two of you.”  He scolded. “From now on, the only thing that Jade has to be hearing is not arguing.” He continued giving us multiple eye rolls.
“But doc, didn’t Jade do that because we were arguing?” Harold cut in. I hate to admit this, but he is right. Jade wanted to grab our attention because we were fighting.
She used that as motivation to try to move and she was successful.
“So you’re saying you two should keep fighting in front of her?” But as they say, the Doctor is always right. If Jade is completely conscious we shouldn’t be arguing where she can hear us.
“If you want to take her home, please observe positivity.” Doctor Santiago said and left me and Harold alone. “He’s right.” I finally found my voice.
Harold nodded and led me back into the room where Jade stayed on the bed, of course. I went to Jade’s side and whispered to her ear, “Let’s go home.”

|===At Harold’s House===|

The three finally reached Harold’s house which looked more like a castle. A butler assisted Catherine with Jade’s wheelchair and showed them to her room. “This is Ms. Jade’s room, yours, Madame, is right next to this one.” He said to Catherine who felt flattered with her label as he opened the door behind him.
Inside, there was a four-poster canopy bed with silk pink fabric draper over it. The bed itself was pink and there were a few pillows at the headboard. There was a window seat at the right wall and a door which she assumed was the bathroom.
The bed was in the middle of the room and to the left of it was some shelving and two cushioned chair separated by a round coffee table. There was also a flat screen TV.
Next to that was a built-in closet which was filled with a bunch of clothes for Jade. The wall was coated with paint and there were a few hand painted designs around.
Harold really did put an effort in making this room and he wasn’t even sure if Catherine would’ve agreed to his deal.
The butler breezily placed Jade down on the bed and covered her with the blanket. He then gestured for Catherine to follow him and he then led her to the room right next to Jade’s.
Her room was twice as big as Jade’s. There was king sized bed right in the middle of the room and on top of it was a portrait of Catherine.
There was a flat screen TV right in front of the bed and bedside tables next to it. Catherine strolled around the room and saw that she has a walk-in closet filled with elegant dresses and fancy sleepwear.
She then went inside the bathroom which has a sauna and a bathtub. Catherine saw tube of shampoo which was in her favorite scent, strawberries.
Harold really is trying. He even remembered Catherine’s favorite shampoo. But Catherine has no intention of getting back with him. Well, technically, staying in a relationship with him.
Catherine shook her head and began to examine the room a little more. She saw glass double doors that lead to a paved balcony complete with a mini-garden.
The walls had built-in shelves filled with books and knick knacks. Catherine plopped herself on the bed wanting to rest a little but she got carried away into a deep sleep.

Jade’s POV
The door shut and I was left alone in my new room. Mom’s room will be next to mine but I don’t think she’ll be visiting any time soon. She might get some sleep.
I have no intention of sleeping, I want to stay awake and I don’t think I can even sleep.
Just then, the door clicked open. Mom wanted to come after all. “Hi Jade.” Dad’s voice came instead of Mom’s. What now? Is he here to tell me that there are some fancy gowns I should wear?
“I just wanted to say I’m sorry.” He said his voice screaming agony. “I know this is hard for you, but I’ll try to make it up. Here,” He laid down some weight on my lap. Its edges say it’s a box.
“Remember those records you used to send me? I have them all here.” He said. I froze. I forgot about them.
Ten years ago, when dad left us, I was clueless. Mom told me that I could send records to Dad and he’d respond. I sent a hundred and waited every single day for his voice tapes but they never came.
Eventually, I gave up on this and stopped sending my records to Dad.
I heard him open the box and took out some records. “I labeled them. This one’s your first ever record.” He played the record and I almost cried, well, I don’t know if I cried.
“Hi Daddy! Mommy made apple pie, please come so you could try one. They’re delicious.” My six year old voice filled the air and Dad played the next one.
“Daddy, I lost my favorite pair of socks so Mommy bought me another one with cat faces. It’s my new favorite.” My records were so random probably because I had a six year old’s mind back then.
He played some more until he reached the last record that I sent. “Daddy, I didn’t see you in my graduation. I sent you a reminder, were you sick? Daddy, my friends had their fathers with them in the graduation. Daddy, why aren’t you coming home?”
Then I remembered how all my kinder friends teased me when Dad didn’t come to the graduation. I sent him records weeks before it, talking about how excited I was to see him in my graduation day.
I cried and cried. Mom could do nothing to comfort me and I threw my medal on the floor.
When I thought he was about to leave he played another one. This time it wasn’t my voice that came out of the record player, it was his.
“Hi there Princess, I wish I could come there and taste your mommy’s pie. But, I have a lot of work so maybe next time. I love you.” It took me a moment to realize that it was replying to my first record.
He played another one. “Oh! Was it the heart socks that you lost? Well, I guess your mommy bought you a new one. I’ll send you some socks of your favorite design. Can you tell me? I love you, honey.” This one was replying to my second one.
“These are the copies of the records I sent you.”
WHAT!!?! He didn’t send me any records. Mom always checked the mailbox and saw nothing. Or, he could’ve sent me records but mom didn’t tell me.
My heart ached as I came into a shocking discovery. She lied. My mother lied…

LISTEN: CHAPTER 3

“WHAT!”
Catherine stood frozen solid inside Jade’s hospital bedroom. She faced the tuxedoed man as if looking for something. As if finding a weak spot and then he could say it was all a joke.
        She didn’t find any.
After all he’d done, he’s gonna come back and ask us to stay at his place like nothing happened! Catherine was about to voice out her thoughts when…
“Play smart Catherine.” He pointed at Jade’s figure whose eyes were still closed but now it was tearing up.

Jade’s POV
No, mom. Please. We can find money somewhere else please.
I tried to yelp, to talk but nothing would come out. I can’t believe this, dad is using me to get mom back. UGH! I hate this, I can’t even stand up and comfort mom.
My stomach churned and my heart clenched, am I suppose to even feel this? I don’t know, it’s like my first time being in a coma.
“Fine,” Mom said evenly but I know deep inside, she’s dying to tear dad up to pieces ‘till he’s nothing but tiny pieces of paper. I know I would’ve done that if mom wouldn’t.
        If I could,
Mom gave out a long, dreary sigh. I heard dad sit on the chair mom sat on once. “Hi honey, everything’s gonna be alright, now.”
At that moment, I honestly thought I was about to wake up just to scoff at his statement. Honestly, deep inside I know nothing is gonna be alright. I can be stuck in a bed ‘till God knows when?
“Once we get home, everything’s gonna be okay.” I would laugh at his pet talk if I can. This man really has to move on.
He had a choice to stay as a father and a husband but he liked being a CEO better. Mom and dad are divorced now, why wouldn’t he just let us go, let mom go?
Then mom’s crackling voice came again, “It’s just for the meantime honey.”
I know she was telling that to herself. This is very difficult for mom. She’s doing the best she can do for me and is forgetting about her own needs.
“Then everything would go back to normal.” She paused, quite hesitant to finish. “Just you and me,”
Dad sighed, “When are you gonna tell her, Catherine?” I barely made the words out, he was whispering.
Tell me what? I don’t think I was supposed to hear this but…
“She doesn’t need to know,” Mom hissed and at that point I don’t think dad is lying. “It’s our problem, we don’t need to worry her.” Now, they’re talking like a married couple hiding something from their comatose daughter.
        WHY CAN’T I MOVE!!!?????
The air around sucked the patience that I got and I really wanted to get a grip of myself. Mom and dad were still mumbling but I don’t really care anymore.
I focused really hard trying to get a hold of my hands and I wanted to move it. I know this was hopeless, I know the consequences of my coma but maybe if I just focus……………

Catherine’s POV
        “She’s our daughter.” He reasoned.
I scoffed. “If you chose wisely, she’d still be yours, Harold.” Involuntarily, tears come running out of my eyes. He sighed, taking the matter into fact
“I can’t believe it, Catherine!” He said as if to blame me. We shouldn’t have these problems right now if he stayed.
My tears now came like a waterfall from my eyes and I swear, I looked like a tomato that had been painted red.
“Wait.” Said a voice, it wasn’t Harold’s. It was Doctor Santiago’s. He had been in the room all this time, listening to us discussing our problems.
I was about to scold the doctor for butting in our cold conversation when I saw that he was pointing at, Jade. She was sweating hard and I kept looking at her. Just then, she slowly lifted her hands.
I ran to her side to grab it and she smiled.
“Unbelievable.” Doctor Santiago exclaimed. He managed to find his way to the other side of the bed and he was staring wide-eyed at Jade.
“It proves that Jade is thinking. She’s completely conscious of what’s going on.” Doctor Santiago glared at me coldly as if to say ‘Yup, she heard everything’

Jade’s POV
        Mom!? She’s alive!
Oh thank goodness, at least she’s alright. “I’m so sorry. This is all my fault.” Her voice was now trembling. Oh…no mom. It’s my fault, I wasn’t strong enough.
You did your best so we won’t be burnt to smithereens. I closed my eyes, refusing to face the challenge. It’s just that, sometimes things don’t work out as it we want it to.
If anything, I should be the one who’s saying sorry.
“I stayed in the hospital too.” She said. It might be only a few minutes since our “conversation” started, but I’m pretty sure she’s tactfully staying out of my coma condition.
“My neck was hanging out of the window and my head got banged badly.” She added, trying to smooth her crumpled voice. “I was temporarily paralyzed for a whole week.”
She paused, knowing she shared too much. I tried desperately not to make a mental picture of mom after the crash but I just can’t.
Her eyes wandered around the hospital room. It did the exploring for her because she can’t move. Bandages wrapped her neck and head making her look like a bleeding mummy.
Bags surrounded her beautiful blue eyes and her mind has only one thought: Me.
If only I was strong enough to withstand the blow, mom wouldn’t be crying right now.
“Oh…h-honey.” She stammered. Something made her so nervous, she only whispered. “D-don’t cry, please.” Wait….I’m crying? UGH! It’s so hard now that I can’t control myself.
“I’m feeling all better.” She said, trying not to tremble. She started to cry some more, knowing all she’s doing is lying to herself.
I didn’t believe her one bit. She might be physically fine but she’s got me to carry around as a burden in her shoulders. Chaining and slowing her down.
“And we can finally go home.” She finally added. The last word stung even if I know it wasn’t supposed to. Home? You mean the one that was destroyed by that storm? Or the temporary apartment we’re supposed to live in ‘till we can stand for ourselves?
“Doctor Santiago will visit every week for your medication.” She said with a sigh.
My medication? I might not be an expert on meds but I’m pretty sure treating comatose patients cost a lot. And I don’t remember mom getting me a health card.
Has she been working? If so, is her salary enough? Who’s funding all this?
“Excuse me Doc. Ms Jade Fox has a visitor.” A female voice-not mom’s- chirped in after the door screeched loudly.
Mom gasped as I heard footsteps coming towards us. “Hi, Catherine.” I might not hear that gruff voice frequently, but I can surely recognize it.
        How could I forget: Dad.

Catherine’s POV
A tuxedoed man stepped in and I immediately gasped, not caring what Jade’s reaction might be. She too will be fairly surprised when she hears his voice again.
“Hi, Catherine.” I was surprised by his patience. I returned none. “What are you doing here? You’re not needed. Jade and I learned to live without you.” I trailed.
“Have you ever wondered who paid the hospital?” I froze. How could I forget? Jade and I don’t have Health Cards. He must’ve paid for everything.
I dropped to the chair speechless. He didn’t say a word too knowing I would have kicked him out even if he did pay for it.
But I can’t kick him out, I can’t work, I lost my job. And even if I find a new one, it won’t be enough for Jade’s medication. I don’t like this guy but I gotta play smart.
“What are you doing here?” I repeated my first question. He smiled at me. It wasn’t a mischievous smile, it was more of an awkward one.
“I’m here to visit Jade.” He said as he approached Jade lying down the bed. He kept looking at her sympathetically, I scoffed. If he took the role of the sympathetic father earlier, he would still be one.
“Weird.” I thought aloud. He turned his gaze towards me. “What’s weird?” I gazed at his teal eyes that I once adored but now it doesn’t seem so beautiful.
“Why are you helping us?” I asked him evenly even though inside I was dying to punch him in the face for what he has done, months of heartbreak and tears.
“Why? You’re my family.” I stood up on his words. How dare he call us family. He did sign up the divorce. The practical side of me recalled. He didn’t go to court on the assigned day which made me hate him so much more.
Jade didn’t have to know. This is my problem so I don’t need to tell her.
“Play smart Catherine, I have a deal.” I grinned. “Of course.” He glared at me but continued. “I’ll pay for Jade’s medication but…”
I waited for his deal. I survived a crash with a mere wound, what can’t I do?
“Both of you will stay in my house just until you can fund her on your own.” He said as if it was no big deal. “WHAT!??” I screamed.

LISTEN: CHAPTER 1

Thunder clasped and a strike of lightning collapsed down Clover Point Road in Emeryville. Traffic of colored cars piled up in the street as they desperately raced the storming winds.
Jade rode in their gray car with her mother, clinging tight on the car door. She sat on the passenger seat, fighting the urge to look back at her hometown being torn bit by bit by the storm. She stared in her lap for a moment, refusing to imagine what will happen next.
Feeling her neck ache a little, she lifted her head to see the blue pick-up truck just a few centimeters ahead of them despite its fast pace.
They were violating all the speed limits set for safety but, this time, the police didn’t care. In fact they too were exceeding the limit for their own safety.
Jade looked at her mom who was busy with the road. She was too in depth that Jade didn’t want to bother her.
She turned her head towards the window to see the sight of a wheat field being destroyed by the fury of the storm. A streak of light went down startling Jade as she blinked a few times to see that a fire was burning the field now.
She looked back at her mother who seemed to have witnessed what has happened too but didn’t want to say anything.
Just then, a bolt of lightning struck the truck in front of them, setting it to fire. The truck spun around as it moved closer and closer towards them in a fast motion. It was all too quick for Jade, but her mother was faster.
She turned left to avoid colliding with the pick-up truck. Jade’s mother then realized that they weren’t the only ones in the road. They were coming towards a yellow cab that was right beside them.
Jade instinctively shut her eyes closed. Then, she felt a bump making her thrash her whole body towards the dashboard, head first.  Jade didn’t open her aqua-blue eyes anymore. She couldn’t move. Her dizziness swooped in and darkness swallowed everything whole.
        Jade and her mother crashed.

* * * Weeks Later * * *

Catherine’s POV
Ow……I whined making some heads turn towards my direction. I smiled awkwardly at them and was glad that they turned their head back. My hands-involuntarily-reached up to my wound even if the doctors have repeatedly told me that I shouldn’t be touching it.
I pushed on it gently but began to regret my decision when it stung. I winced as I instantly pulled my hand back. I then checked my watch and it read, 9:45.
It’s been 2 hours, is something wrong? The pathetic side of me squeaked. Of course something is wrong, what did you expect. After a car crash everything would be alright? I reasoned to myself but I still couldn’t help but look at the hallway where Doctor Santiago disappeared.
Other people were also waiting down the hall, others tearing up beside their doctor. Somehow I can picture myself in a flood of tears too when Jade’s doctor comes back.
What are you saying Catherine, nothing’s gonna happen to Jade…I hope.
Just then, Doctor Santiago’s face came into view and I immediately stood up in impatience. I smiled at him but he didn’t return the gesture. He handed me a folder of papers but I didn’t open it up.
“Please doc, tell me. Is my daughter okay?” I said eagerly. He sighed and made me sit back on my chair. He sat next to me and gulped. “Jade has no broken bones or has any serious injuries.” I sighed in relief as the doctor said the words.
“Mrs. Fox, Jade is a strong and brave girl, she’ll overcome this.” The doctor added making me confused. “I thought you said Jade is physically fine.”
He sighed once more, “Mrs. Fox, your daughter is in a coma.” I froze. My eyes widened as I tried to wall up my tears. “What?” I blurted out, not caring of the people’s stares.
“Mrs. Fox calm down please. It’s not a direct hit so it isn’t severe.” I almost scoffed at his words. How could a coma not be severe? I whined, mentally this time. “She’ll be back in 5 years.”
I stood up, furious. “You say that Doctor as if 5 years isn’t a long time.” I said, evenly but I was still showing signs of anger. “Mrs. Fox, if you want your daughter back, you have to put up an effort.”
I was insulted. Does Doctor Santiago think I’m not a good mom? Perhaps not a good driver but I’ll have him know I am a great mother. “I’ll do everything.” I said with difficulty. At that moment I just wanted to crumple this doctor till his face looks like an old man’s.
“Good.” He nodded for me to follow him. I went to walk beside him as he continued to explain Jade’s condition. “Coma, when a person can’t see, smell, move, talk, feels a little bit but can hear clearly.”
I noticed him side-eye me, pausing. “You need to offer her a lot of time so that you can talk to her. Talking to comatose patients decrease their sleeping time.” He winced when I glared at him.
Then, he stopped his tracks and I realized that we have arrived.
I opened the door with a loud creak and saw my precious daughter lying on a bed, her eyes shut. I went to her side and held her hand and with my best non-croaky voice, I talked to her.
******

Jade’s POV
I heard a loud creak, the door opened once more. But who could it be? Is it the doctor? He went to my side and I felt my hand touch a smooth skin, that’s when I realized, this definitely wasn’t Doctor Santiago.
“Honey?” A female voice said, obviously she had been crying. Her voice was all cracked despite her attempts to hide it. It’s not when she talked some more when it hit me.
           Mom!? She’s alive!
